NEW ORLEANS SAINTS INSPIRED ARMCHAIR QUARTERBACK SHIRT

The Saints got off the snide by beating the San Diego Chargers 31-24, while Drew Brees threw for four touchdowns and broke the NFL touchdown record set by Johnny Unitas.

Where were you?  You couldn't get tickets to the historic event.  Didn't tailgate. Didn't go to the bar.  Yeah, you were THAT guy.  However, you watched the drama unfold from the comfort of your living room.  No doubt you watched the game from the vantage point of your couch, or better yet, your armchair.  Revel in this. Show the football world that you're a New Orleans Armchair Quarterback.

DODGING DARTS, THE SAINTS COME MARCHING IN

"Oh when the Saints, come marching in, oh when the Saints come marching in..."

It's official, if only temporary, LB Jonathon Vilma and DE Will Smith had their suspensions for their roles in the Bountygate scandal overturned by a three-member appeals panel, and have returned to the team.  Well, at least for week 1.

Technically Roger "Dodger" Goodell retains the right to hand down new, refined punishments pertaining to the league's nearly three-year investigation of the Saints.  Given Goodell's track record, it's a pretty sure bet he'll come back with the requisite justification for his actions, declaring a violation of the "conduct detrimental to the league" provision, vice violation(s) of "undisclosed compensation agreements" as was originally claimed.

The New Orleans Saints dodged a dart [sic], at least for now.

SOME SAY SAINTS DON'T HAVE A PRAYER

There are some dyed-in-the-wool New Orleans Saints fans...  Stop.  After all those years of the paper bag wearin' Ain't fans, can anyone refer to any Saints fan as 'dyed-in-the-wool"? Their mystical ascension was the result of a fan base fueled by the karma of some national support thrown their way in the wake of hurricane Katrina.  Granted, there are plenty of die-hard Saints fans floating around, many of them coming out of the closet on the heals of the victory in Super Bowl XLIV.

Anyway, despite a solid showing Sunday night (beating the Cardinals 17-10 in the Hall of Fame Game) New Orleans Armchair Quarterbacks are reporting that the team looked sluggish in recent practices.

It will be interesting if the Saints take on an "us-against-the-world" mentality with Bountygate and the suspensions of head coach Sean Payton and LB Jonathon Vilma.  Adding to the doom and gloom is the six game suspension of interim coach Joe Vitt and realization that Steve Spagnuolo will be taking the reigns for the first part of the season.

Given these setbacks, even some of those die-hard, dyed-in-the-wool, fans are saying that the Saints don't have a prayer.  That may be so, but New Orleans will always have 2009 and Super Bowl XLIV.  There are still plenty of great New Orleans Saints championship gear available to those wishing to relish the past with such a bleak future.

LAST DAY FOR SEAN PAYTON AS SAINT'S HEAD COACH

The NFL suspension of Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints starts this Monday,  for the bounty program that apparently occurred during the period from 2009 until 2011.

It is being reported by CBS and elsewhere that the league, as part of the penalty, is expecting Payton to avoid the New Orleans Saints and to avoid "operational communication" during the course of the suspension.

Notwithstanding, I bet if you asked Coach Payton, members of the New Orleans Saints organization, or it's fan base, if winning the Super Bowl hinged on whatever advantages the alleged 'bounty program' provided, would they have condoned the Payton's actions, I'm sure they'd all agree that it was worth it.  Dat's how they seem to roll daghn dare.

EAGLES Scavenging the NFL Scene as the SAINTS March on...

Indianapolis Colts owner Bill Polian felt compelled to point out where his team lost the Super Bowl, instead of simply praising the World Champion New Orleans Saints or Sean Payton and his staff for a gutsy called game. [click here for great SAINTS GEAR].  No real fault there, and I do enjoy it when guys don’t necessarily take the sports high-road, exhibit a little less ‘sportsmanship’ in their statements to the press, and generally let it all hang out there. He pointed a finger (No, not THAT finger) at ‘offensive’ line play, and the special teams. There was a lot of truth in what he said, but it came off like a little sour grapes as well.

What I was pleased to hear in his anguished words was that he found fault with the Colt’s special teams unit, just falling short of calling out former-Eagle Hank “couldn’t catch it if it landed in my bread…” Basket and throwing him under the proverbial bus. Hank could hardly be blamed for misfielding the surprise kick, and I’m sure he fought like the devil in the ensuing scrum, but I do love that there is a Philadelphia connection there.

Badd Newz: The Untold Story of the Michael Vick Dog Fighting CaseSpeaking of Philly and dogging it on the football field, I’m not sure what to make of Michael Vick’s revelation that he took a ‘…lazy and complacent’ approach to playing when he was with the Atlanta Falcons. No big surprise there, but was this revelation simply a teaser for the Eagles quarterback heir apparent’s 10-part documentary-series, "The Michael Vick Project," which was unleashed on the public by BET network Tuesday night?

The smart money insists that Kevin Kolb will get the start for the Eagles if and when they part ways with Donavan McNabb. However, one has to stop and wonder if we are going to be seeing Michael Vick taking a much more prominent role in Philadelphia. Perhaps running an Eagles version of the Wildcat, appropriately termed; Wild Dog?
